The training started with 24 hours spent on TCP/IP fundamentals and packet analysis. John Wohlfert provided the training on TCP/IP, with Steve Hailey covering selected topics from the Packet Analysis and Intrusion Detection course. All participants were given access to study materials online, and many completed a practical on packet analysis, analyzing several different packet captures.

In December, the Certified Ethical Hacker portion of the training commenced. We made it through both volumes of the CEH textbooks, and completed several lab activities. Participants saw for themselves how a Web server was compromised by taking control of one themselves and creating a backdoor. Trojanized programs were used to take control of computers and keyloggers were installed to capture keystrokes and passwords.

22 students sat for the Certified Ethical Hacker exam. All passed!

All learned a great deal, and the training will go a long way in helping to solve cases involving hacking and malicious software. With the "Trojan defense" becoming more common, the Washington State HTCIA chapter will continue to offer training of this type to its members. All of this training was provided at a price tag of 650.00 versus the thousands that it would cost elsewhere. Due to the success the Washington State chapter realized, the training may be offered for other HTCIA chapters in late 2008, early 2009.

The chapter would like to thank the following people for their support:
